About 88888 initiative
This was an initiative taken by our table to promote the awareness about Global warming and fight against it by joining 88888 campaigns.
What is 88888?
We urged everyone to switch off lights for 8 minutes at 8 PM on 8th august 2008. We informed that Global warming is a real threat and all must act now. By this initiative we aimed following:
Building Awareness
Taking Individual responsibility for our surroundings
To be part of the solution
A feeling of togetherness amongst people when they all take a stand to arrest a common threat.
Impact of Global warming is far reaching and it is needed by all the acknowledge same. This effort was towards that
What our table did?
Our table printed the handouts in large numbers (10000). We circulated these pamphlets all round Pune at key places example: bills at Vaishali were accompanied by this, club solaris, Deccan, petrol pumps, societies in Kothrud and Aundh, Sopanbaug , tata sky customers etc...
Highlight of Publicity achieved:
A curtain raiser of this event was published on page 3 in Punes Newsline of Indian express of 6th August. The news also features Round table India achievements and will help us reach our cause to more people.
Actual Event
On that day, our tablers and ladies circulated the pamphlets from 7 Pm till 7 30 at key locations and we met after that at Autumn Service apartments and observed the lights out. During light out we resolved together to follow simple rules which can help fight global warming like putting off lights, not keeping devices in standby mode, using cycles, walking for short distances etc.
We also solicited support to our schools through publicity done.
Publicity achieved:
A curtain raiser of the 88888 event was published on page 3 in Punes Newsline of Indian express of 6th August. The news also features Round table India achievements and it will help us reach our cause to more people.
More than 10000 pamphlets were distributed all around pune depicting our cause and schools etc. We had encouraging response and calls resulting from that exercise
Fellowship angle to the event
This was a good fun as everyone had a cause. We meet once or twice to plan to event. Print and circulate the pamphlets we distributed in Pune. By means of this we urged all to put off lights at 8 pm on 8th Aug 2008 for 8 minutes as awareness to fight against global warming. Two days all tablers took responsibility to distribute the pamphlets publicizing event and table activities. It was fun, with updates from all over Pune about score: the number of pamphlets distributed. Finally we all met that day at Chirag’s petrol pump on University Road. There we distributed to all. A great bonding…
After the event, few tablers had a late coffee session at Sanjay’s Place to discuss all.
